SBA is gearing up for National Small Business Week, June 17-21. This year the organization is offering educational panels and workshops on topics like how to start business, social media 101, how to protect your business against cyber security threats, how to start exporting, to name a few. This year marks the 50th anniversary of National Small Business Week.

It is possible to tune into events via live stream at www.sba.gov/smallbusinessweek, and by joining the daily Google + Hangouts with additional business and social media experts. During National Small Business Week, you are also encouraged to visit your favorite local small business and tell about it on Twitter with the official hashtag #SBW2013.

Hang Out with SBA and Industry Experts

As part of National Small Business Week, SBA is hosting a series of Google+ Hangouts which will be  streamed live at www.sba.gov/smallbusinessweek, http://www.youtube.com/sba, and http://plus.google.com/+sbagov. All Hangouts will start at 4pm ET. Topics and panelists include:

• June 17 – Getting Started with Social Media

Panelists from Twitter, Constant Contact, W20 Group and Google will hang out.  Bill Murphy Jr.,  author and columnist for Inc.com will moderate the Hangout.

• June 18- Managing Your Business’s Online Reputation

Panelists from Yelp, LinkedIn, OpenSky, Dun and Bradstreet Credibility Corp., Google and Manta will hang out. Rieva Lesonsky, CEO of GrowBiz Media will moderate the Hangout.

• June 19-  How a Mentor Can Help Your Business

Panelists from the SBA’s Office of Entrepreneurial Development, America’s Small Business Development Centers, and Women’s Business Centers will hang out.  Fran Tarkenton, NFL legend and entrepreneur will moderate the Hangout.

• June 20-  How to Get a Business Loan

Panelists from Wells Fargo, SCORE, SBA Office of Capital Access, and SBA loan recipient Ninkasi Brewing Company will hang out.  Calvin Goings, SBA regional administrator will moderate the Hangout.

When you apply for disaster assistance please have the following available:

• Social Security Number (including your spouse’s)
• Private insurance information, if available
• Address and zip code of the damaged property
• Directions to the damaged home or property
• Daytime telephone number
• A telephone number where you can be reached or sent a message
• A mailing address
• If you want your disaster assistance funds sent directly to your bank, provide the FEMA agent with your bank account type (savings / checking), account number and routing number.

Disaster recovery assistance for eligible recipients is available without regard to race, color, gender, religion, national origin, age, disability, English proficiency or economic status.

The Mortgage Relief event, hosted by Governor Pat Quinn and DuPage County will provide homeowners with helpful advice about mortgage financing, foreclosure prevention, legal rights and credit counseling.

Homeowners need to bring the following items to the mortgage event: mortgage statement; 2011 and 2012 W-2 tax return with all schedules; copy of rental agreement (if necessary); two months of recent paystubs; budget of household expenses; documentation of other income; two months of recent bank statements; recent utility bill; profit/loss, if self-employed (last six months).

In addition, representatives from FEMA will be available to help residents apply for flood assistance. Residents need to bring the following information to the FEMA event: social security number; description of losses that were caused by the flood; insurance information; and contact information.

Both the Mortgage Relief and FEMA flood assistance events are free and will be held simultaneously from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at the DuPage County Government Center Auditorium located at 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. Registration will be held until noon.

For those who are unable to attend the flood assistance event, residents can visit www.disasterassistance.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) to apply for assistance. The toll-free telephone number operates from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily until further notice.

US Department of Labor launches online retirement toolkit in cooperation with Social Security Administration, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced the launch of an online toolkit to help workers identify key issues related to retirement planning. The department’s Employee Benefits Security Administration developed the toolkit in cooperation with the Social Security Administration and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to help workers understand important decisions related to employment-based plans, Social Security and Medicare.

The toolkit includes a timeline illustrating key decisions to be made about retirement benefits, Social Security and Medicare; general guidance; and a list of publications and interactive tools to assist with planning.
